Suki Binjal

Solicitor, Consultant and former interim Monitoring Officer, Northumberland CC

Suki is a recognised public sector solicitor with over 25 years of providing legal and strategic advice to local authorities and other public bodies.

 

She has worked with several Districts, London Boroughs, County Councils and Unitary local authorities where the perception of good governance, culture and behaviours have varied, both across the Councillor group and between statutory officers and those in operational services.

 

Having completed her recent assignment with Northumberland County Council as its’ Monitoring officer and interim Director of Governance and Law, Suki has been appointed as an Independent Adviser to Middlesbrough Council’s Improvement Board. 

 

The Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities has also appointed her as a new member of its’ pool of candidates for future Best Value inspectors and commissioners.

 

Her previous roles have included a directorship with the Commission for Racial Equality. She was also a founder member of a Women’s Refuge and also chaired the Portsmouth Equalities forum, as well as holding various Non-Executive Director roles, the most recent being an external advisor on the policy committee with the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

 

Suki was the President (2017/19) of Lawyer’s in Local Government (LLG) and has a long-standing and impressive history of working with LLG. 

 

She is currently the Chair for Fighting Fraud and Corruption Locally, an LGA supported initiative and is also LLG’s elected representative on the Law Society Council.

 

Suki is passionate about excellent public services, motivated to achieve results by being transparent and inclusive, encouraging values that enhance social responsibility and accountability to the public purse.
